1985 Porsche 930 Turbo Coupe

Porsche’s 911 Turbo, commonly known by its internal code “930”, is one of the most legendary sports cars of all time. The 930 propelled the 911 model range into supercar territory and quickly earned a reputation as both a giant killer and a serious handful for inexperienced drivers. Known officially as the 911 Turbo Carrera, the original 930 featured a completely reworked version of the 3.0L flat six, initially pushing out 260 horsepower and mated to a long-legged four speed gearbox. The four-speed was stronger than the five-speed, and the huge torque of the new engine meant the extra cog wasn’t needed. Since the 930 was essentially a homologation special to allow Porsche to race turbocharged cars in GT-class competition, the marketing team at Porsche hoped for a stripped out special in the spirit of the 2.7 RS, and a limited run of 500 units. Dealers dutifully pushed the cars as limited production models, creating a frenzy of demand. The demand was so strong in fact that a further 500 were added to the production and the Turbo’s future was assured. The formula for the original 930 Turbo spanned from 1975 through the 1993 964 3.6 Turbo.

This 1985 930 Turbo is an outstanding example of the iconic 80’s supercar. It has been sensibly upgraded to give even more breathtaking performance than when it was new. It has not been restored but instead has been carefully maintained and now presents in exceptionally nice condition inside and out. Currently showing approximately 48,000 original miles, this 930 has clearly been cherished from day one. The combination of Guards Red over black leather and black Fuchs alloy wheels is practically the blueprint for a classic 1980’s 911 Turbo. Paint quality is in exceptional showable-driver condition. Panel fit is factory correct and excellent, a clear indicator that the car has never left the road at speed– something that happened to many 930s, often tail first. A clean Carfax report further backs up the evidence of a pampered and accident-free existence. The black sports interior is in remarkable condition given its nearly 30 years in service. The leather is supple and free of cracks or tears, with a highly attractive and pleasingly broken-in feel. Dash, door panels and carpets are similarly excellent. A small-diameter leather-wrapped aftermarket steering wheel has been fitted for slightly quicker steering response, and a Sony stereo lives in the dash above the controls for the factory equipped air conditioning.

Mechanically, this 930 has been treated to some serious performance upgrades. The engine has been rebuilt to 3.3 liter specification with highly desirable twin-plug heads, a K27 turbocharger upgrade, a beautifully polished high-flow intercooler, and stainless exhaust headers custom adapted to the stock muffler – for a slightly stealth look. Drivability has been refined with a short shift kit and new shift bushings all around. It has recently been fully serviced and is ready to scare the daylights out of your passengers. Fresh rubber wraps the highly polished stock alloy wheels with black painted centers. This 930 strikes a perfect balance between the thundering performance that modified 930’s are capable of, and retaining the iconic looks of the original car. This 80’s icon is fully serviced, tuned and ready to be cherished by its next owners.
