How do you celebrate one of your most successful race cars ever to make worldwide headlines? Well, in Ford's case, you turn it into a roadgoing warrior spanning two generations and over 15 years. The Ford GT was initially created to celebrate the company’s centennial and was shown off at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. Designed by Camilo Pardo, J Mays, and with development assistance from the legendary Carroll Shelby, the first generation of the GT landed in the public’s hands starting in the fall of 2004.

After a total of 4,038 GTs produced from 2005 to 2006, Ford took a decade-long hiatus before finally unveiling the second generation GT at the 2015 North American International Auto Show and the unveiling of the 2015 racing video game Forza Motorsport 6. This second generation marked 50 years since the GT40 won the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans and production began in December of 2016.

Aerodynamics was key in the development of the second-gen Ford GT, with a profile inspired by LMP1 race cars, a carbon fiber monocoque, and open airflow “flying buttresses” at the rear of the car. The front end features vents in the hood that pass oncoming air over the top of the car while the rear features an active spoiler, a large diffuser, and hollow circular tail lights that allow air taken in by the flying buttresses to escape. The interior was spartan, cargo space was next to nil, and the interior seats were fixed in position. The powertrain consisted of a twin-turbocharged version of Ford’s compact EcoBoost V6 mounted in the middle of the car and mated to a 7-speed Getrag 7DCL750 dual-clutch transmission.

All of the focus on performance resulted in an initial figure of 647 hp, later increased to 660 hp with a 2020 model year update. Top speed is an eye-watering 216 mph, with a 0-60 mph time of 3 seconds flat. Stopping power for speeds like this was provided by Brembo ventilated carbon-ceramic discs with six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear. 1,350 units of the second-gen Ford GT were produced between 2016 and 2022.

This 2020 Ford GT “Lightweight Carbon Series”, chassis number L153, is finished in Frozen White with blue accents and exposed carbon-fiber stripes over a black Alcantara Dark Energy interior. It was purchased new from Sheehy Ford of Gaitherburg, MD, and optioned with the highly desirable Lightweight Equipment Group 600A. Additionally, the $20,000 Carbon Blue Graphics package was selected to match the mirror caps and center stripe to the brake calipers, contrasting brilliantly to the glossy 20″ carbon-fiber wheels.

This GT also benefits from the 2020 model year update, whose new gallery-cooled pistons, more powerful ignition coils, and new engine tuning resulted in the 13 hp increase to 660 hp. Further changes included a new titanium exhaust system developed by Akrapovič that shaved 9 lb off the total weight, increased suspension stiffness in Track mode, and better airflow into the flying buttresses.

Being a two-owner car with just 274 miles at the time of cataloging means this Ford GT is nearly indistinguishable from the day it left the Ford factory. The paint job along with the various carbon fiber accents present perfectly while the massive carbon-ceramic disc brakes behind the matching carbon wheels still have plenty of life. On the interior, the Alcantara surfaces along with the knobs, switches, and buttons have nearly no wear on them and function as they should. Included with the sale are the owner’s booklets, the factory battery tender, and the original window sticker.

It’s hard to understate the performance that Ford instilled in their second follow-up to the legendary Ford GT40. From all angles, inside and out, the second-generation Ford GT is a road-legal race car that demands to be pushed and enjoyed to the limit. Such low mileage and highly optioned examples don’t frequently hit the market, making this one a rare chance to be part of American racing heritage.
