Ford has long been known for their quality and innovative truck designs, particularly in the Pre-War era. One of the firm’s innovations was its Cab Over Engine, or COE, design that debuted in 1938, making Ford the first company to offer a factory COE heavy-duty truck available to its customers. The COE design allowed for a shorter wheelbase and therefore allowing for a much smaller turning radius compared to a conventionally designed heavy truck – ideal for use in America’s growing big cities. COEs where purchased by many companies with no bed or rear bodywork. The cargo area was a blank canvas for truck coachbuilders who created many one-off and low-production bodies custom designed and built to the customer’s specifications.
Reflecting the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styling trends of the era, this award-winning, beautiful COE is fitted with an equally stylish rear body that complements the factory styling brilliantly. COE trucks were special-use vehicles that were made in small numbers compared to a standard pickup truck and very few survive today - especially in this condition.
This rare survivor was lovingly restored to a very high standard seldom seen bestowed on a COE truck. This truck was thoroughly restored to factory specifications – the previous owners avoiding the urge to modify and hot-rod as is quite popular with these eye-catching trucks. Some of the notable features of this truck include the famous Ford “Flathead” engine, Chrome front bumper, tilt-out front windshield, chrome-plated roof-mounted horns, and a beautiful Red, Cream and Black paint scheme with period-correct dark green mottled vinyl seat upholstery. The highly-stylized custom bed is amazing - curved and sleek with heavy tubular bed rails, rich oak wood bed floor, fold-down Ford script tailgate and stylish fender skirts adorned with the classic Ford V8 logo. A truly unique and interesting design that is enhanced by the quality of its restoration.
This truck is absolutely stunning and attracts attention whenever it is seen. In 2002 it was honored as an AACA Sr. National First Prize winner, as well as Dearborn Award winner from the Early Ford V8 Club of America. Both of these prestigious awards validate the quality and authenticity of this rare Ford. It has been carefully maintained since then and remains in excellent condition today. This spectacular and unusual Ford COE would be an exciting addition to any commercial vehicle or Americana collection, or a bold and unique choice for business promotion. Once one sees this amazing Ford, they will not soon forget its handsome looks.
