1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Roadster

The R107 SL arrived in 1972, replacing the popular and well-received R113 280SL. The new 107 was all-new from the ground up, with a design centered on Mercedes-Benz’s ongoing commitment to safety. Continuing the theme set by the R113, the new R107 offered relaxed, luxurious performance from a range of six and eight-cylinder engines, with outstanding build quality and elegant, understated styling by Friedrich Geiger. As a testament to the Geiger’s superb design, the R107 SL remained in production for over seventeen years, with the styling virtually unchanged from the first car in 1972 to the last in 1989. It holds the crown of the longest-running passenger vehicle in Mercedes history, and only the Gelandewagen off-roader outlived it. The SL is an enduring symbol of 80s glamor and lauded by enthusiasts around the world for its performance, everyday practicality, and rock-solid quality.

This 1989 560SL is a superb one-owner example with just 26,000 miles from new. From the final year of production, this SL represents the ultimate evolution of the R107 series and comes equipped with a 272 horsepower, 5.6-liter V8, and all of the latest safety features, including ABS brakes and airbags. This cherished SL has been beautifully maintained by one dedicated owner from new and presents with highly attractive black paint and correct exterior fittings. It is straight, crisp, and well detailed throughout, with the quality feel and impeccable detail expected from a 560SL. Appointments include original rectangular fog lights, chrome bumpers and mirrors, a matching factory hardtop, and correct flat-faced alloy wheels shod with 205/65-15 Michelin radials.

The interior is trimmed in original black leather with charcoal carpets, all in excellent condition. The seat upholstery shows some light creasing and a minor scuff on the outer bolster, consistent with the car’s age and mileage. It is entirely correct down to the original airbag steering wheel, and Becker AM/FM/cassette player. The wood trim is in excellent order on the center console and bordering the instrument panel. Beneath the integrated boot cover is a black German canvas soft top, which is in very good order with minimal creasing in the fabric and soft rear window. The trunk houses the original spare wheel with Pirelli P6 tire, and the factory tool roll still in its original plastic. Also included are the original first aid kit and owner’s manual.

Mechanically this SL is in excellent order, and the big V8 runs smoothly, sending power through a 4-speed automatic transmission. The powerful and flexible V8 is silky smooth throughout the rev range, with plenty of low-end torque for silently trundling down your local boulevard and the horsepower to push it on to 140 mph with ease. The engine bay tidy and orderly, appearing well-maintained and honest. The undercarriage is likewise very clean and consistent with the car’s age and mileage. Many of the components still show original assembly markings and factory-applied finishes.

The R107 SL stands apart from its contemporaries for its unique combination of timeless style, superlative build quality, and distinctly Teutonic luxury. This ultimate iteration adds surprising performance to the list, thanks to the might of its 5.6-liter V8. This gorgeous, low mileage example is turn-key, ready for enjoyment, and will surely make a welcome addition to any enthusiast’s garage.
