Jaguar’s gorgeous XK-series cars had been on the market for nearly a decade by the time the XK150 debuted in 1957. Jaguar had been continuously developing the XK series thanks in large part to innovations they learned through the C-Type and D-Type racing programs, as well as by paying close attention to their customers. As the XK120 evolved into the XK140, it grew slightly in cabin space thanks to a relocated engine, gained a few BHP, the steering was upgraded to a rack-and-pinion unit and shock absorbers were updated to telescopic-type. In keeping with the XK120, the XK140 was a fast, gorgeous and now more comfortable sporting car. Getting into the late 1950’s, however, the XK140 was starting to look a bit dated. So Jaguar unveiled their most drastic redesign on the existing XK chassis- the XK150. This new car was lower and wider than before, with a much roomier cabin and a more modern fascia. The styling had less in the way of dramatic feline curves, as it was wider and more slab sided than its siblings, but it was still very much unmistakable as a Jaguar and of course, quite easy on the eyes. Mechanically, the biggest news was that the XK150 gained a full set of four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes – an innovation proven at the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The 3.4 Liter XK engine produced a healthy 210 horsepower and an optional overdrive was added to the four speed manual gearbox for further high-speed refinement. Today, the XK150 is highly sought after by early Jaguar enthusiasts for their exceptional road manners as well as its distinctive good looks.

Our featured XK150 is a 1958 Open-Two-Seater (commonly referred to as the Roadster) with a full matching-numbers 3.4 liter drivetrain and factory installed overdrive. It first rolled out of the Browns Lane Works on March 26^th 1958 and was sent to Jaguar Cars New York soon afterward. Today, it is still finished in its original color combination of Pearl Gray over red leather – an achingly handsome, very rare and desirable color scheme. Cosmetically, it is in excellent order inside and out. An comprehensive history file shows that after passing through the hands of Jaguar specialist Guy Broad in the UK, it made its way back to America where it its Midwestern owner lavished approximately $65,000 on an cosmetic restoration. It has been used sparingly since and remains very beautiful with excellent paint and wonderful finishes throughout. The body work and panel fit are excellent all around and the chrome on the bumpers and trim is to a very high standard. This was clearly a very professional and high level job done on a car that was already quite good to begin with.

The highly correct cabin is trimmed in lush red Connolly leather with matching red Wilton carpets, and the car is fitted with a dark blue canvas top. The OTS differed from the Fixed-head and Drop-head coupes as it has no wood trim inside. Instead, a sporty and purposeful instrument cluster sits center stage in the dash, trimmed in correct gray vinyl material, bookended by red leather. Unlike the XK120 and 140 roadsters before it, the XK150 features more civilized roll up windows. The leather trim is in excellent condition, displaying a wonderful, broken-in character like a perfectly fitted glove. The interior is correctly trimmed, inviting and very pleasing.

Records of the extensive restoration work show a complete overhaul of the original, matching numbers drivetrain was performed in 2006 by J.K. Restorations of Illinois. Just shy of $14,000 was spent on parts alone for the overhaul, ensuring a reliable and usable end result. Beyond mechanical soundness, the engine bay is beautiful to look at as well with correct finishes and details. At the same time, the original wire wheels were restored and rechromed, and are now wrapped in blackwall radial tires for a fabulous look against the gray paintwork. Everywhere you look on this fine example you find a car that has been correctly restored, but never over-restored. It is thoroughly usable and we have confirmed that it is an absolute joy on the road. Exquisitely prepared and simply gorgeous to look at, this is a very fine XK150 that is sure to please.
