1964 Jaguar 3.8 S Sedan

Crediting any one auto maker with the invention of a particular vehicle can be a dubious proposition as there’s always plenty of room for argument. But any discussion about the origin of the sports sedan (or saloon, if you’re speaking of English cars) is bound to include Jaguar with their svelte Mk I and Mk II saloons of the 1950’s. The Mk II became an instant legend when fitted with the 3.8L “XK” inline six and manual gearbox – it was a favorite among police, bank robbers and racing drivers alike. The British Saloon Car Championship often looked like a one-make series as the Mk II became the car of choice for many legendary racers. There is always room for improvement, however, and for 1963 Jaguar chose to update the 3.8 with revised styling and a new independent rear suspension, based on the modular design shared by the E-Type and the larger Mk X saloon. The 3.8 S-Type became the new mid-range model, placed below the much larger Mk X, and was available with either a 3.4 or 3.8 liter XK engine with twin SU carburetors and either a Borg-Warner automatic or 4-speed overdrive manual gearbox.

While the S-Type did not repeat the Mk II’s motorsport success, it was a much more sophisticated performance car thanks to the independent rear suspension and improved braking, and was a thrilling drive when fitted with a manual gearbox and the revvy 3.8L six.

This 1964 S-Type is quite exquisite inside and out. Sold new in Italy, the car was imported to the US in 1982, and has covered only 21,198 kilometers, or just 13,625 miles since new. Old English White paintwork is fresh and looks fantastic on the S-type’s lines. It is contrasted nicely with a gorgeous original black leather interior. The chrome and bright work are gorgeous and the car rides on a set of fantastic chrome wire wheels with appropriate blackwall radial tires. The sumptuous cabin is trimmed in black leather with beautiful wood work providing a delightful ambience. A multiband radio is fitted and this is an original four-speed manual car with optional overdrive, making it an excellent choice for touring. The 3.8L, twin cam inline six is beautifully presented in an outstanding engine bay with the correct fittings and details present. There is even an oil change sticker dated 1982 – for the 19,000 mile service. This car has been lovingly maintained for its entire life. Very few of these cars have survived in such incredible condition. Immaculate, original and beautiful, this 3.8 S-Type is sure to please even the most demanding Jaguar enthusiast.
