Built by the Karmann coachworks of Osnabruck, Germany (which also built the Beetle convertible) for the next twenty years the clean design and economical operation of the Karmann-Ghia coupe and cabriolet made Ghia's name known worldwide. In September of 1961, VW introduced a new 1500 cc version of the Karmann Ghia based on the new Type 3 platform. As the Type 1-based Karmann Ghia had been known internally as the Type 14, the new version was aptly dubbed the Type 34. A better performer than the Type 14, the Type 34 was also bigger, more practical, and more angularly styled. It was also expensive, however, so production only numbered a tenth of the much more recognizable Type 14. The Type 34 was also never officially sold in the United States, making this example quite a rare Volkswagen indeed. And of the small selection here in the States, even fewer are restored to the same degree as this car. Finished in red with a white top, it has a tan leather interior with red carpets and rides on new blackwall tires with hubcaps and trim rings. The paint, leather, carpets, rubbers and lenses in this restored car have all  been restored, and the engine bay housing the air-cooled 1500 is highly detailed.  The Type 34 is a thoroughly collectible and very interesting but not often pampered classic VW, an this is surely one of the nicer examples to be found anywhere.
