Despite the laurels earned by Jaguar's sports models, from the SS 100 through the legendary XK-series, it was the sedans which formed the backbone of Jaguar's production and success. In fact much of the reason for the sports models, especially the XK 120, was to attract attention, and gain competition successes, for the saloons that filled the production lines at Brown's Lane and generated the profits that powered Jaguar's growth. The Mark IX, introduced in 1958, combined Jaguar's traditional saloon design with two developments from the Jaguar racing program, four-wheel disc brakes and the 220hp 3.8 liter XK six engine that would not appear in the two-seaters for another year. Jaguar had established its reputation among saloon owners for exceptional performance and the Mark IX was no exception, boasting a top speed of 115mph, velocity that most sports cars of the time were pressed to equal. The other attribute that contributed to the value of Jaguar saloons, and the Mark IX as well, was the quality of Jaguar's interior appointments. Jaguar owners enjoyed a Bentley-esque interior environment, lavishly swathed in fine leather and carefully fitted wood veneers. This left-hand drive 1961 Jaguar Mark IX saloon is one of the last produced before introduction of the all-new Mark X in late 1961. It is finished in subtly complementary shades of light grey and beautifully appointed in rich, red leather with matching carpets. Its 220hp, 3.8 liter, XK six drives through the preferred automatic gearbox. Equipment includes a desirable sliding sunroof, fender mirrors, steel wheels with trim rings, hubcaps and whitewall tires, Lucas driving lights and a Sony cassette stereo. It has been restored to attractive driver standards inside and out and comes with the owner's manual, other books and manuals and the proper jack. It runs and drives well. An automobile of proven, understated elegance, style and excellent performance, it is ready to be used and enjoyed.
