Mercedes-Benz's success with the 300SL and its tamer and more luxurious relative the 190SL led it to introduce a new series based on the W113-series 230SL in 1963. Powered by overhead camshaft six-cylinder engine, the engine has already developed and proven for both reliability and performance in the 220SE but enlarged to 2.3 liters for better performance. With fully independent suspension (including a low-pivot rear swing axle with compensator spring) and monocoque body/chassis it was more powerful, more luxurious, and more comfortable; as many feel; more attractive than its predecessors. It was succeeded in 1967 by the 250SL and in 1968 by the 280SL, essentially similar but with larger engines and higher levels of comfort and sound deadening. Occasionally a terrific quality M-B 280SL comes along, like this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL. It was restored to the highest standards of accuracy and cosmetic appeal starting with a particularly sound, solid and well-maintained original car. It has an automatic transmission, Becker Europa radio, air conditioning and both hard and soft tops, even a first aid kit. The restoration is to better than new condition with meticulous attention to details with crisp chrome, beautiful paint and a finely detailed engine. Finished in Silver-Grey, the upholstery is blue M-B Tex with blue carpets and a dark blue cloth top. The body fits and panel work are simply described as excellent, the way a quality automobile like the 280SL should be. Some details like the fender wells and engine's cadmium-plated fuel lines have recently been redone. This is the way an older car should be done. a superb car to own, drive and show with pride and confidence.
