1949 MG YT

Rarely seen -- only 877 were built in just two years' production -- the MG YT 4-seat tourer was designed for Americans, a fact emphasized by its design to accommodate both left-hand and right-hand driving positions, with the 1,250cc dual carburetor 54.4hp engine used in the companion sports model TC. Also in common with the TC was the full complement of cockpit instruments including a tachometer not fitted to the YA saloons. The YT, however, adopted independent front suspension with coil springs and wishbones from inception while the TC continued the pre-war T-series' leaf sprung solid front axle. Only a few right-hand drive YTs were built, the rest were delivered for export with left-hand drive. Supercharging was a popular way of extracting additional power from the MG XPAG engine with many aftermarket units available, such as the one fitted to this beautifully restored 1949 left-hand drive example. It appears to be a Marshall-Nordec unit breathing through a single large SU side-draft carburetor. With the 6psi boost available from similar installations power could be expected to increase by as much as 50% and give the 75mph standard YT Tourer a top speed of nearly 100mph. This example is beautifully restored in red with proper maroon leatherette upholstery piped in gold and has black carpets and a tan cloth disappearing top with a matching boot cover. It is a 2002 AACA National First Prize winner and still is show ready with chrome wire wheels, black wall tires, a Motometer, folding windshield, Lucas driving lamps, badge bar, wind wings and dual rear view mirrors. It is highly detailed throughout, with excellent paint, upholstery, interior trim and particularly rich, deep chrome plating. The engine bay is highly detailed and the overall condition is impeccable. MG YT Tourers are inherently rare and distinctive making this a standout participant in any MG club or British car event.
