Conceived after World War II by Jean Daninos as a competitor to France's famed Grandes Routieres from Bugatti, Talbot- Lago, Delahaye and Delage, the Facel Vega was an early adherent to the combination of big American V-8 engines with European suspension and coachwork design. Production was small, at most just a few hundred cars a year. Daninos served a select, demanding clientele who appreciated -- and was able to pay for -- the Facel Vega's combination of abundant power, distinctive styling, great handling, comfort and luxurious accommodations. This 1958 HK 500 is a marvelous largely original example powered by its original Chrysler V-8 with 4-barrel carburetor and Torqueflite automatic transmission. It rides on chrome spoke Borrani wire wheels with narrow whitewall tires and is finished in white with its original black leather upholstery. It comes from California where it has been well maintained throughout its history. It is really phenomenally well preserved, with doors that shut perfectly and line up great. Aside from one older repaint it appears to be completely original and has been recommissioned recently so it runs and drives well. It is a fun and responsive car to drive that needs nothing to be used as is, but it also would be the basis of a straightforward restoration to show quality condition. Examples of any 1958 car in this kind of well maintained, largely original condition are very hard to find, much less a rare, high performance Facel Vega HK 500, making this an opportunity that will rarely if ever be repeated.
