1964 Daimler Majestic Major Saloon

In July of 1958, Daimler introduced their replacement for the Regency, the Majestic. Although it had a classic-looking coachbuilt body, the Majestic was technically advanced for a luxury sedan in the late Fifties, with a three-speed fully automatic Borg Warner transmission, power steering and, impressively, vacuum-servo assisted Dunlop disc brakes at a time when discs were found only on a few high-performance sports cars. The engine was a 3.8-liter pushrod straight-six that made 147 brake horsepower that pushed the big Daimler to a top speed of over 100 miles per hour. The Majestic’s performance would greatly improve, however, with the introduction of the Majestic Major. Announced at the 1959 London Motor Show and built beginning in late 1960, the Major was a limited luxury model as a supplement to the standard Daimler Majestic for Daimler’s most demanding customers. Six inches longer than the standard car, the Majestic Major used Daimler’s 4,561 cc V-8, which brought power to 220 brake horsepower. The Motor recorded a top speed of just over 122 miles per hour, very impressive for a large, imposing luxury automobile weighing over two tons. The Major was produced until 1968 but because it was such an exclusive and expensive car at over £3,000 (about $15,000 at the time), only around 1,000 were produced. Of those 1,000 cars, very few were left-hand drive like this 1964 Daimler Majestic Major Saloon. Part of a unique Daimler and Lanchester collection that was moved from the UK to North America about 25 years ago, it is finished in a deep green metallic and has chrome hubcaps, trim rings, new radial tires and Lucas fog lamps. The green leather interior features a beautiful wood dash with lots of instrumentation, a banjo-spoke steering wheel and pull-down picnic trays in the rear. Operated regularly by its previous owner, this Majestic Major is thoroughly sorted mechanically and has had the paint and interior recently redone. It offers reliable and immensely comfortable motoring thanks to strong running gear and roomy, sumptuous interior with ample space for luggage in the cavernous trunk. A distinctive and exclusive car with an abundance of character, this stately classic Daimler is ready to be regularly enjoyed and will attract many curious glances.
