2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme Coupe

Upon its release in 1992, the Dodge Viper was unmistakably a performance car and not much more. It lacked traction control and ABS, had no exterior door handles or key locks, no air conditioning, no airbags, a canvas roof, and vinyl windows that used zippers to open. That rawness didn’t last long, and future generations of the Viper added significant driver comforts while still retaining the American performance it had become known for.

The fifth and last generation of the Viper, known as the VX 1, was introduced in 2013 as a completely redesigned model with features like anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, and traction control to bring it up to speed with vehicle safety standards of the time. This Viper was initially offered in SRT or GTS trim, with the GTS offering more driver comforts over the base SRT. Power was provided by an 8.4 L V10 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission that together output 640 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque which was increased to 645 hp in 2015. 0–60 mph came in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 206 mph.

Among the various special editions that the VX 1 Viper was offered in was the ACR, an acronym for American Club Racer. The Viper ACR was introduced in 2015 for the 2016 model year, with a base price of $121,395. The new carbon fiber body kit it donned featured a unique front splitter, canards, and a fixed rear wing that produced a total of 1,533 lbs of downforce. Performance figures remained the same as in the other Viper variants while braking was provided by Brembo carbon ceramic discs with six pistons in the front and four in the rear. The ACR was originally equipped with Kumho Ecsta V720 ACR tires, a special variant of the Kumho V720s that were specifically made for the ACR.

If that all didn’t satisfy your need for speed, the Extreme Aero Package might just do it. With the addition of a removable front splitter extension, an adjustable dual-element rear wing, four dive planes, six removable diffuser strakes, removable brake ducts, and removable hood louvers, the ACR Extreme Aero could produce up to 1,710 lbs of downforce. Despite a reduction in top speed from 206 mph to 177 mph, this variant still broke 13 track lap records when it hit the market. In total, 2,427 fifth-generation Vipers were produced from 2013 through 2017.

This particular example is a 626-mile 2017 Dodge Viper ACR equipped with the Extreme Aero Package and the optional Exterior Carbon Fiber Package. This car was first delivered to Gerry Wood Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge of Salisbury, NC in Gunmetal Pearl with a black and red stripe over a black leather and Alcantara interior. Other optional equipment includes Header Red seat belts, an ACR Extreme car cover, Viper Door Sill Plate Applique, carbon fiber structural X-brace, and carbon fiber black interior accents for a total MSRP of $153,535.

All of the finishes and surfaces, both inside and outside of this Viper ACR, are remarkably untouched as one might expect given the low miles. The Gunmetal Pearl paint job is perfectly accented by the Carbon Fiber Package and the striking stripes that span the length of the car. These details are continued on the inside, where the red stitching, optional Header Red seat belts, black leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber accents echo the car’s exterior. All of the controls are in excellent shape and the 8.4″ Uconnect infotainment system functions as intended.

The 2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme Aero was a perfect send-off for one of America’s most beloved performance cars. What started out as a raw, performance car with few comforts for the driver and passenger alike, was eventually molded into a more livable yet equally as wild beast by the end of its production cycle. This Viper has yet to be fully awakened and the potential inside that broke 13 lap records upon release can be felt with any slight touch of the gas pedal. Have you ever wanted to feel 1,710 lbs of downforce?

Upon purchase, the new owner will receive all of the owner’s booklets, the original window sticker, and the optional ACR Extreme car cover.
