1984 Ferrari 308GTSI QV Spyder

The Ferrari 308 is perhaps one of the most recognizable and iconic sports cars of the period. Made famous in television and movies, the 308 was Ferrari’s first major commercial success, selling more than 12,000 examples from 1975 through 1985, and a further 6000 units as the revamped 328. The design, penned by Leonardo Fiovaranti at Pininfarina, became an icon of the 70’s and 80’s. The 308GTB was the replacement for the unloved 308GT4 and the successor to the Dino 246GT, at the entry level of Ferrari’s lineup. The transverse 3 liter V8 and 5-speed gearbox were essentially carried over from the GT4, but the rest of the car was treated to a full makeover. Gone was the angular Bertone styling, and in its place was a sleek body with the signature side inlets.

In the 308GTB/GTS, the four-cam V8 went through several evolutions. Initially a two-valve per cylinder engine with a quartet of Weber carbs, it gained Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection in 1980. The GTBi and GTSi ran cleaner but suffered a loss in horsepower. Two years later, the power returned with the addition of four-valve cylinder heads for improved breathing. With performance restored, and the addition of better drivability thanks to the fuel injection, the 308 GTSi QV was better than ever and remains among the most desirable of the series for collectors and serious drivers. In today’s terms, performance isn’t ground breaking, but the 308 does offer kart-like handling, a magnificent soundtrack and of course that quintessential Pininfarina style.

This 1984 308GTSi QV is a very tidy, low mileage, 2-owner example finished in the classic combination of Rosso Corsa over tan leather, accented with lovely dark red carpets, in desirable open-topped GTS spec. Having covered only 18,295 miles from new, it remained with the second owner since 1992. Approximately 5 years ago it was treated to a high quality respray in the original shade of Rosso Corsa. The car still looks fresh and attractive. It rides on the correct original wheels shod with proper Michelin TRX tires, original equipment rubber for the 308. The tan interior is in pleasingly original condition, free of rips or excessive wear, a testament to the low mileage. Attractive red carpets and leather door panels are also in very good order, while the leather dash is free of cracks and shrinking. This car is equipped with factory air conditioning and electric windows and was upgraded in period with a high-end Nakamichi audio system which gives a serious improvement over the original stereo.

The fuel injected four-valve V8 engine is clean and orderly, in factory original condition and showing evidence of regular care, and the car was recently treated to a full service including timing belt.  Original handbooks, the original space-saver spare wheel, and the all-important jack and tool kit in their original bags are all included in the sale. The 308 may be among the most numerous of classic Ferraris, but they are currently enjoying a dramatic surge in collectability. Precious few have survived as well as this example, as many suffered at the hands of bargain hunters. Thankfully, the previous owner cherished this example and cared for it properly. This low-mileage, highly original, and very desirable 308GTSi ready for its next long-term owner.
