1968 Jaguar E-Type 2+2

Introduced in 1966, the Jaguar E-Type 2+2 Coupe had long been contemplated in Coventry and championed by the company's legendary founder Sir William Lyons. Concept and prototype 2+2 coupes were created almost from the inception of the XKE.

The wheelbase of the 2+2 was stretched 9 inches with all the added room allocated to the folding rear seat and the 2+2 quickly exceeded demand for the fixed head coupe. Key to the 2+2's appeal was the careful integration of the extra length into the E-Type's sleek, streamlined design, a factor that also increased the interior headroom by a useful 2 inches.

This 1968 Jaguar XKE 2+2 was built just before introduction of the Series II in mid-1968, now described as a Series 1 1/2. It incorporates a number of changes from the original XKE design to meet U.S. safety and emissions requirements as well as a multitude of revisions to improve comfort and reliability. Most visibly, it has higher open headlights required by U.S. regulations. Stronger door latches, an energy-absorbing steering column, hexagonal wheel nuts, rocker-type dash switches, wider front seats, better heat shielding and a splash shield on the alternator were among other improvements. Importantly for some collectors, the original blade bumpers that so graciously complemented the XKE's body design were retained. The Series 1 1/2 continued the 4.2 liter engine but fitted two Stromberg carburetors to U.S.-delivered cars.

Finished in metallic silver with black leather interior, it rides on chrome wire wheels with radial wide whitewall tires and is fitted with the rare Borg Warner automatic transmission, factory air conditioning and stereo radio. Its livery lets the E-Type's gorgeous lines speak for themselves. Given a good quality repaint and new interior in the recent past, it is a beautiful driver quality car that runs and drives well, in short, an ideal car to let a family enjoy the distinct pleasure of owning and driving a beautiful Jaguar XKE.
