1973 MG B GT V-8 Coupe

Beginning in 1973, MG combined the lively, lightweight MG B with the Buick-derived aluminum-block 3528 cc Rover V-8. The powerful, reliable and very tunable Rover V-8 was also exceptionally light, and in fact weighed less than the standard MG B’s iron four-cylinder engine while providing vastly more power and torque and requiring only minor modifications to the chassis and suspension. Almost 400,000 MG Bs were built from 1962 to 1980 with around 9,000 examples of the six-cylinder MG C built from 1967 to 1969. The number of genuine V-8-powered MG Bs, by comparison, was only 2,591. It was also never officially exported to the United States and the vast majority of them were destined for the domestic market. There has been no shortage of V-8 conversions of standard MG Bs, but a real factory-built car in any condition is exceptional.

This car, however, is not in just any condition. An authentic MG B GT V8 and a more desirable chrome bumper example, it has received a stunning restoration to incredibly high standards that are usually reserved for much more valuable show cars.

Finished in maroon, it has a black interior, Britax sliding sunroof, eight-spoke alloy wheels, four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, a wood-rimmed sports steering wheel, and has been fitted with performance exhaust with side pipes. An original UK market, right-hand drive V-8, it comes with service receipts dating back to 1994, an Abingdon Works production history certificate, reproduction workshop manual, VAT discs from 1984 to 1999 and documentation from the car’s importation into the United States in 2002. Overall, it is enough documentation to fill two binders. The concours quality restoration given to this car means that from the paint, chrome and interior to the highly detailed engine bay, everything is fantastic and leaves nothing to be desired. The grunt from the potent Rover V-8 in such a compact, lightweight car also provides an incredibly thrilling and rewarding driving experience. A top-notch, authentic example of the ultimate road-going MG sports car, it is an extraordinary automobile.
