The 111-series Mercedes-Benz is highly respected among discerning collectors for its combination of excellent build quality, sophisticated design, comfortable ride, great handling and luxurious appointments. It is one of very few vintage automobiles that drives just as well as a contemporary luxury car, and is often just as reliable. In typical Mercedes fashion, it was far ahead of its time.
The pinnacle of the series is the 3.5, powered by Mercedes-Benz’s first V-8 engine, a sophisticated light alloy head, single overhead camshaft design employing the highly sophisticated Mercedes-Benz/Bosch fuel injection system. Built only as coupes and cabriolets, the 280SE 3.5 was a limited production, high performance, expensive luxury automobile, costing between $13,000 and $15,000 in the U.S. – at a time when that much money would buy two loaded Corvettes.
This Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 is a thoroughly restored example with all new paint, chrome, leather, wood, door panels and carpets. It is finished in metallic bluewith a dark blue leather interior, and has factory correct steel wheels and hubcaps, amber driving lights and a rare optional grille guard. It is also equipped with a Becker Europa stereo, air conditioning, sunroof and center shift automatic transmission. The engine was completely rebuilt by a marque specialist, and the fuel and brake lines are all new. A new stainless steel exhaust has also been fitted. Comprehensively restored to high standards and still very fresh both inside and out, this 280 SE 3.5 is among the best examples that can be found. With fabulous paint and interior as well as a very clean engine bay, it is as showable as it is ready to drive and enjoy with its impressive speed and satisfying comfort.
