Conceived after World War II by Jean Daninos as a competitor to France’s famed Grandes Routieres from Bugatti, Talbot-Lago, Delahaye and Delage, the Facel Vega was an early adherent to the combination of big, reliable, powerful American V-8 engines with European suspension, coachwork design and rich, luxurious appointments. Production was small, at most just a few hundred cars per year, meaning that Facel Vegas are among the most exclusive automobiles of their era. Daninos served a select, demanding clientele who appreciated – and was able to pay for – the Facel Vega’s combination of abundant power, distinctive styling, great handling, comfort and luxurious accommodations.

This 1960 HK500 is one of the very finest examples in existence. Sold to a collector in the Netherlands about a decade ago, it received an exhaustive, no expense spared, ground up, nut and bolt restoration to concours quality standards. Everything, including the gauges, was taken apart and replaced or repaired with an incredible attention to detail. The fit and finish are immaculate, and, with the exception of the subtle addition of disc brakes from a Jaguar XJ6 for improved stopping power, everything on the car is correct as it was originally delivered. Finished in an attractive combination of dark silver metallic with a black roof, it has an oxblood leather interior, matching carpets, chrome wire wheels, Pirelli blackwall tires, exquisitely refinished wood dash and restored, period correct radio. The engine bay is highly detailed to concours level, and the car both runs and drives extremely well and of course gives a smooth, comfortable ride. This car is a testament to Jean Daninos’ vision and concept of a postwar Grand Routiere. For those who appreciate and desire only the finest automobiles the Facel Vega is one of the best, and this HK500, with its phenomenal attention to detail and presentation, is one of the very best Facel Vegas.
