As the 1950s were drawing to a close, rumors abounded about Jaguar’s successor to the XK Series, and when Jaguar introduced their new XKE in 1961, it was simply unprecedented. Its svelte body, perfected under Malcolm Sayer’s deft hand, evoked all the right cues of the C- and D-Type racing cars, much to the delight of the motoring world. Not only was it the most beautiful automobile on the road, it was also the best value in performance cars, offering 265 horsepower from its 3.8-liter XK straight-six as well as four-wheel independent suspension, inboard rear disc brakes and a genuine 150 mph top speed. Its performance put it firmly in the company of marques like Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati and Aston Martin, whose products offered no more performance than the Jaguar but cost twice as much. This performance masterpiece would evolve through the next decade and a half, but the original Series I remains the most pure and satisfying. Its textured anodized aluminum interior trim, white-on-black instruments and leather upholstery exemplifies Jaguar’s determination to deliver comfort and a focused driver’s environment without ostentation or excess cost. This 1962 Series I XKE Roadster comes with a copy of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate of Authenticity. Finished in its original colors of Opalescent Dark Blue with red leather interior and chrome wire wheels with blackwall radial tires, it also has a brand new blue cloth top (as originally built) and top boot. Inside the trunk are the jack, hammer and spare, while the beautiful interior features a solid state radio. Restored to be driven and enjoyed with a period correct but non-matching numbers engine, this car is a very pretty example in fine condition both inside and out. Perfect for top-down blasts through the countryside and occasional stops to admire the alluring curves of its bodywork, this very desirable early XKE Roadster is just as tempting as it was in 1962.
