Based on the Daimler Regency platform, a handful of four-door saloons bodied in aluminum over English ash wood by Hooper & Co. of London were built beginning in 1952. Aptly named the Empress thanks to their elegant, regal appearance and gorgeous, swooping body, the Daimler Empress was built in very small numbers. Finding any Empress is noteworthy, but this almost completely original right-hand drive 1953 Daimler Empress Mk II Sedan is exceptional. It comes from a unique Daimler and Lanchester collection that was moved from Great Britain to North America about 25 years ago and was carefully maintained during that time. Its livery, gold on the body sides with black above the beltline and on the fenders accenting the elegant lines of the Hooper coachwork that flow through the rear fender skirts, has been redone below the beltline but the upper body paint is original. It has newer blackwall tires, brakes, kingpins and head gasket. Otherwise, this is a preserved original car; in over sixty years this Empress has done only 67,000 miles. The original jack and tools are in the trunk. Daimler's fluted clamshell grille is flanked by distinctive tri-bar headlamps and Daimler’s clamshell grille. The grey leather interior shows patina in a the best sense of the word, and should be described as mellowed rather than worn, while the extensive wood trim on the dash, doors and trim is exquisite. There are power windows in the front and manually operated windows in the rear. The front seat backs are fitted with foldout tables for passengers riding in the rear bench seat. A testament to the craftsmanship of both Daimler and Hooper, this remarkably original car is made all the more desirable by its rarity. It is an ideal automobile for an astute collector to enjoy, experience, admire and continue to preserve an example of the finest English craftsmanship.
