1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL

The SL series from Mercedes-Benz introduced in 1963 continued the designation of the 300SL and 190SL but was in fact an entirely new concept. It would prove to be more popular and longer-lived than Mercedes-Benz's wildest dreams, culminating in the 280SL in 1968. Powered by a 2,778cc single overhead camshaft inline six-cylinder engine, the 280SL developed 180 brake horsepower and 193 lb-ft torque. The unit body/frame two seat coachwork was tight, solid and attractive and today, a generation after it was built still communicates style and taste. This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is the finest we have ever offered -- and that is not a small sample. It was bought in October 2011 from its original owner in Oakland, California, a California car since new, and was solid, straight, and rust- and dent-free. It then went through a total restoration to the highest standards by a Mercedes-Benz specialist who attended to each and every detail with minute care until the finished 280SL is better than new but follows its original data card so its presentation is correct and as-delivered throughout. Finished in Dark Olive Green with Parchment MB-Tex upholstery, a green cloth top and correct square weave carpets, it is fitted with automatic transmission, Becker Europa stereo, Goodyear radial tires, color matched hubcaps, a Mercedes-Benz brand battery and comes with the original owner's pouch and books. Many details often overlooked were correctly treated, like the headrest air vents, under hood cadmium plating, firewall sound deadening and a top custom made in the correct original color which is unavailable from aftermarket top suppliers. Even the dashboard pad was remolded in its correct original shape. In an indication of the car's correctness even before restoration, it comes with its original spare tire and tool kit, original manuals, service book, top and seatbelt instructions and a copy of the Mercedes-Benz factory data card. Judged by the marque experts at the June 2012 Mercedes-Benz Jamboree, it earned First Place overall. This is not only a triumph of meticulously correct restoration to better than new condition in its original (and very attractive) configuration and colors but also a sound and complete original rust- and dent-free 280SL now fresh from the hands of only its second owner from new. There is none better.
