1949 MG YT

The Y-type MG introduced after World War II incorporated a number of unique features that set it apart from its counterparts in the Morris family. Most notable was a boxed, welded frame that passed under the rear axle, rack and pinion steering and coil spring independent front suspension. Unlike MG's sports cars of the period with their pre-war origins, flexible frames and live axle front suspension, the Y-type was decidedly modern with unusually supple suspension, a great ride and improved handling. Initially built as saloons, the lighter YT Tourer was introduced in 1948. It got the dual carburetor 54.4hp TC engine and a full complement of gauges on the dashboard. Performance was better than the sedans and if not quite up to that of the lighter TC, the YT's independent front suspension and stiffer frame was much more competent over a variety of road surfaces. Built only in 1948 and 1949, only 877 MG YT Tourers were built. Their generous accommodations, superior chassis, and classic MG style has brought them a following among collectors. This 1949 MG YT 4-Seat Tourer is one of just 31 believed to have been built with left-hand drive and has had a single owner history since the 1950's. Its documentation includes a 1953 property tax receipt in the name of the immediately prior owner, demonstrating over a half century of continuous ownership. It was body-off restored some time ago in red with tan leather upholstery piped in red and a tan cloth top and is equipped with black wall tires, driving lights, Lucas Flamethrower headlights, tan body welting and a tan cloth tonneau cover. The restoration reportedly cost $60,000 when done in the late 1990's and left no issue unaddressed. Documentation includes the original owner's manual, lubrication and maintenance schedule as well as the owner's handbook. An unusual but comfortable alternative to a TC or TD roadster with room for four (or three and a very full picnic hamper), the YT is rarely seen and widely appreciated.
