1953 Healey

Donald Healey applied his championship caliber rally driving experience in the days after World War II to establishing his own company, the Donald Healey Motor Co, Ltd, in Warwick. The chassis of Healey's own design employed trailing arm independent front suspension with a live rear axle with coil springs all around. Coachwork was specified by Healey and unusually for the time he developed the basic designs of two-door sedan and Drophead coupe in wind tunnel testing. Constructed by Tickford and Abbott respectively, power came from the 2,433cc Riley RM overhead valve four-cylinder engine, a high performance engine with dual camshafts mounted high in the block and operating the valves through short pushrods and rocker arms that developed 106 brake horsepower at 4,800 rpm. A 4-speed manual transmission and 4-wheel Girling hydraulic brakes completed the high performance chassis. This 1953 Healey Abbott Drophead Coupe is one of the last built before Healey's attention was drawn to the Nash-Healey for the export market and the eventual linkup with Austin that resulted in the famed Austin-Healey sports cars. It is an older restoration to driver condition that is now presentable and usable with a charming patina to the leather upholstery. The body is finished in cream complemented by red leather upholstery and a red vinyl folding top. The bright work is good as is the wooden dashboard. The body is showing age, some parking lot dings and less than flawless character of its preparation during restoration. It runs, drives and is usable in its present condition, a car that will draw much favorable attention on tours or in British car gatherings where, with total Healey production of 781 including 105 Healey Silverstone roadsters, it is likely to be the only Healey present. It offers the opportunity to enjoy it as is for some time, or will be an ideal basis for a complete restoration to show quality condition.
