Mercedes-Benz created a continuing success when it combined its competent, elegantly styled, luxurious 280SE 111-series chassis with its 3,499cc single overhead camshaft Bosch electronic fuel injected V-8 engine. Introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1969, the hardtop coupe cost $13,766 POE in 1971. With 230 SAE brake horsepower, 232 ft-lb torque, transistorized ignition and a smooth 4-speed automatic transmission, the 280SE 3.5 was fast (9.5 seconds 0-60), comfortable and had superior road holding. Over the years they have continued to satisfy collectors seeking the finest quality, luxury and performance. This 1971 280SE 3.5 coupe is a marvelous, highly original, discovery equipped with a Blaupunkt radio, center-shift automatic transmission, power windows, power steering and power brakes. In addition it has Behr air conditioning and a factory-installed sliding sunroof. It has an older, quality repaint and it looks like the carpets have been replaced, otherwise it is a clean, sharp, straight original car. The maroon paint and major chrome are in very good condition. Some of the chrome trim is weak, but not deteriorated. It is fitted with radial black wall tires, full wheel covers and chrome wheel well moldings. The interior wood is in good, unrestored condition. The tan leather upholstery is original and has the expected cracks, wear and some tears. It's usable as is, but would be better and more comfortable if it were replaced. This is a car that deserves to be left as is and enjoyed, needing only new upholstery and a trunk mat. The odometer shows 43,000 miles which from the car's condition appears to be all it has covered. This is a rare find. Nothing better illustrates the quality, workmanship, design and materials of Mercedes-Benz in the late Sixties than the way this 280SE 3.5 coupe has stood the test of time.
