1941 GMC Suburban

2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the first use of Suburban to describe General Motors' rugged station wagons. First built on light duty truck chassis by independent coachbuilders, they have come to describe a family of multi-purpose vehicles as suited to hauling a team of surveyors and their gear over rough terrain as to conveying families from the train station to their suburban estates. Most were steel-bodied utilitarian vehicles but a few Suburban’s gained the attention of the wood-body specialists, among them Mid-State Body Company in Waterloo, New York which continued the Campbell name from 1932 into the early Forties. Located in upstate New York, Mid-State had not only Robert Campbell's expertise but also sizable resources of hardwood forests from which to procure the best and most attractive materials. This 1941 GMC CC 101 short (115") wheelbase 1/2 ton chassis bears an exemplary example of Campbell Mid-State's craftsmanship. The 228 cubic inch overhead valve GMC inline six-cylinder engine develops 93hp and has hydraulic valve lifters which minimize maintenance in continuous commercial use. Sympathetically restored with black paint and dark brown leatherette upholstery it has two-row seating leaving ample luggage room behind the rear seat easily accessible from the drop-down tailgate and lift-up rear window as well as the 2/3 width back seat. A crank-out windshield provides summer ventilation. Steel spoke wheels, hubcaps and trim rings complement the utilitarian black wall tires. The interior has sun visors. The wood appears to be largely original and is in very good and well-maintained condition. It is ready to be lettered and logoed for a ranch, winery, studio, B&B, hardware store or other enterprise, needing absolutely nothing to be driven proudly on errands or parades or displayed with pride and confidence.
