It is very hard not to get effusive about Lancia’s. In an era when most manufacturers conservatively developed the ordinary, Lancia’s are refreshingly original. Better yet, they were effectively original, winning races and rallies against highly touted opposition and raising the concept of gran turismo to new heights of sophistication and practicality. The Aurelia B24 is the end result of a tradition of innovation and creativity. Its pushrod overhead valve 60 degree V-6 engine was the first of its type. It has independent rear suspension and a rear-mounted 4-speed transaxle which made the Aurelia and the B24 a pioneer in modern chassis design. The Convertible's Pinin Farina coachwork contains some of the master's best ideas from the mid- and late-Fifties. The B24 is a brilliant little car with a high performance 2 1/2 liter engine that challenges the best from Ferrari and Maserati in a much more innovative, practical and attractive package. This example has never been restored and displays great body fits and flat panels that were so rare on the coachbuilt Italian bodies of the era. It has never required restoration, needing only a capable repaint, new top and carpets to complement its very good original upholstery and sound, powerful engine and drivetrain. It has recently been used in several vintage rallies, then was gone through by a Lancia pro to ensure it is ready to jump in and cruise at disrespectful speeds on a moment's notice. It is a great tour or historic rally car and entirely pretty enough to show at the end of a day's hard run in its red paint, tan leather interior, red carpets and new black cloth top. Its performance will embarrass sports cars of vaunted reputation while the comfort of its fully independent suspension will bring its driver and passenger home at the end of the day ready to enjoy an evening's dolce vita.
