1966 Shelby Daytona Coupe

Few competition cars are as instantly recognizable as the Shelby Daytona Coupe. Penned by Peter Brock and developed under Carroll Shelby’s direction, the original Daytona was purpose-built to dethrone Ferrari in international GT competition. With its dramatic fastback roofline and wind-cheating profile, it became one of the most important American racing cars of the 1960s, capturing the FIA World Manufacturers’ Championship in 1965 and cementing its place in motorsport history.

This Daytona Coupe was assembled by Exotic Auto and completed in 2007. According to documentation accompanying the car, Peter Brock himself was involved with the assembly, a meaningful detail given Brock’s central role in the original car’s design. Additionally, the car was reportedly first owned by original Shelby team driver Allen Grant, displaying this car carries compelling connections to the Daytona legacy it celebrates.

Finished in the classic Daytona Coupe livery of Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes, the car wears racing number 26, a nod to CSX 2601, an original factory works example. During its build, the Daytona with fitted with fender flares, giving this already undeniably attractive coupe and even more aggressive persona. Knock-off wheels are fitted with BF Goodrich high-performance tires, and stopping is handled by large StopTech disc brakes.

The main attraction resides under the hood, a Shelby 427 cubic-inch aluminum V8 fitted with a dry sump oiling system and MSD ignition. The engine bay presents with purposeful clarity, its plumbing and hardware reflecting a build focused squarely on performance. Power is routed through a Tremec TKO 600 five-speed transmission, providing robust torque capacity and modern drivability. Finally, double-wishbone front suspension with coilovers and H&R race springs ensures responsive handling and impressive road manners.

The cockpit is unapologetically sporting and purposeful. Lightweight bucket seats are fitted with Schroth Racing harnesses, while a Momo steering wheel and Motec sport dash reinforce the competition-inspired atmosphere. The environment is focused and mechanical, a faithful interpretation of the original car’s purposeful interior.

While original Shelby Daytona Coupes reside in the realm of museum pieces and eight-figure valuations, properly executed tributes such as this allow enthusiasts to experience the essence of the Daytona as it was intended: loud, physical, and exhilarating. With serious mechanical specification, documented build history, and ties to figures integral to the Daytona story, this example stands apart from typical replicas.

For the enthusiast seeking the drama and presence of one of America’s most significant competition cars, without sacrificing usability or mechanical sophistication, this Shelby Daytona Coupe tribute delivers the experience in thrilling fashion.
