The Beetle had a controversial beginning as the concept for Nazi Germany’s people’s car, but in just a few short years after the end of the Second World War it would begin its meteoric rise in popularity that saw it become one of the most adored, most recognizable automobiles in Europe, the United States and indeed across the globe. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche and intended to be an inexpensive, fuel efficient and well-built car capable of transporting a family of people at highway speeds, it found ready customers in a cash-strapped postwar Europe and brought the concept of small, economical foreign cars to the United States for the first time.
Changes to the Beetle were regular but subtle. In 1949, the engine was enlarged to 1131 cc, in 1952 synchromesh was added to second and fourth gears, and in 1953 the rear window became a single oval pane in place of the split rear window on the original cars. This last change has resulted in the early Beetles, easily distinguished by their split rear windows, being the more desirable variants among collectors. The split window Beetles are also rarer than the later, more widely produced cars and are considered the purest examples of the original design, adding to their value.
During mid-1952 Volkswagen changed the design of the Beetle replacing the rear split window with an oval shaped window. There was a five month cross over in production beginning in October of 1952 where Beetles were produced with a split window body while possessing an updated dashboard as well as the creature comforts of the upcoming oval window cars.
Presented here is a rare and desirable 1952 Volkswagen Beetle known as a “Zwitter”—a nickname derived from the German word for hermaphrodite—denoting this model’s unique blend of early and later Beetle characteristics that appeared during the short five month crossover period. These hybrid features include a revised dashboard, updated interior trim, unique dome light, and vent windows in the doors, among other subtle changes. Chrome trim replaced the earlier aluminum detailing, and several Zwitter-only components make these models particularly sought-after today.
This particular "Zwitter" is finished in a lovely shade of Sea Blue and benefits from an older restoration, with the paint and brightwork still presenting remarkably well. Appropriately, there are a few signs of fading and minor imperfections around the beltline and window trim, typical of a car that has been driven and enjoyed. The body panels are straight throughout, with exceptional and consistent panel gaps. The surrounding glass is excellent, showing no signs of chips or scratches Tying the entire scheme together, are proper wheels with VW logo hubcaps and trim rings, wrapped in crisp whitewall tires.
Stepping into the surprisingly spacious cabin, you’re greeted by a simple, body-colored dash housing the speedometer and clock, period-correct gray leather upholstery, and a cream-colored two-spoke steering wheel and shift knob. Overall, the interior condition is excellent, showing no tears, stains, or visible wear on the seats, carpet, or headliner.
The engine bay continues the theme of thoughtful presentation, housing a clean and well-restored 1131 cc air-cooled flat-four. The engine number, 10498186, corresponds with the chassis number as both having been built in October 1952. Every component is carefully detailed and properly sorted, reflecting the same high standards seen throughout the car.
This charming Zwitter Beetle represents an important chapter in Volkswagen’s storied history, blending iconic early styling with mechanical updates that foreshadowed the model’s evolution. As one of the rarest production variants, it is a highly collectible and attractively presented example that is sure to reward its next caretaker—not only with an engaging ownership experience but also with appreciative comments from enthusiasts and curious onlookers alike. A true must-have for the discerning Volkswagen collector.
