The arrival of Cadillac’s Series 62 marked a significant turning point for General Motors’ flagship marque. The upright grilles and running boards of the Classic Era were finally put to bed, as the Series 62 debuted a fresh and modern new look created by Harley Earl and his team in General Motors’ prolific styling department. The headlights sat in pontoon-style fenders flanking a low and wide horizontal grille. The broad-shouldered body eliminated the need for exterior running boards which in-turn gave the car a sleek and clean profile. Flowing lines and finely judged detailing tied the design together with Harley Earl’s typical restrained flair. Aesthetically speaking, it was one of the most important designs in Cadillac history – often compared with other ground-breaking American automobiles like the Cord 810, Duesenberg J, and Earl’s own 1927 LaSalle.
Under the skin was Cadillac’s L-head “Monobloc” V8 engine which served Cadillac well through multiple evolutions. The 1941 iteration displaced 346 cubic-inches and developed an impressive 150 horsepower. The company produced more than 24,000 Series 62s across a range of five distinct body styles. This beautifully restored 1941 Series 62 is one of just 3,100 cars built with style number 6267D, the stylish and desirable convertible coupe coachwork. The elegant proportions of the two-door convertible body combine with the fresh front-end styling to create one of the most appealing cars of the early 1940s. With the powerful V8, 3-speed manual gearbox, and independent front suspension, the Series 62 is also one of the best driving cars of the period. Also, the Series 62 enjoys Full Classic status in the Classic Car Club of America and is therefore eligible to participate in CARavan tours and club shows and events. Coveted for its exceptional road manners, well-sorted examples such as our featured car are highly sought-after among Classic Era touring enthusiasts.
Elegantly presented in Valcour Maroon over oxblood red mottled leather, this 1941 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible is a marvelous example of the breed. The deep maroon paintwork is outstanding, with straight panels and precise body fit. Brightwork is presented in brilliant order, with a mix of older restored parts and excellent originals showing only some minor hazing and surface imperfections on close inspection. The doors shut with satisfying solidity, demonstrating the exceptional quality that defined Cadillac for so many years. It sits proudly on the road, rolling on wide white wall tires and mirror finish chrome wheel covers. This car is equipped with numerous factory options including, pillar-mounted searchlight, fender skirts (with emblems), chrome wheel covers, radio, and heater.
Complementing the beautiful exterior is a luxurious, oxblood red interior. The mottled leather trim and seats, while older, have taken on a charming character that suits this car’s road-ready nature quite well. The carpets are in a similarly fine order, appearing older with some minor wear, but overall, clean, and tidy. Original options like the radio and heater/defroster are in place.
The 346 cubic inch Monobloc V8 runs strong and is authentically detailed. The 3-speed manual transmission shifts well, and with a useful 150 horsepower on tap the car is a delight on the road. Powerful hydraulic brakes and independent front suspension make it a pleasure to drive in all conditions.
With ground-breaking styling, a powerful engine, and highly refined chassis, the 1941 Cadillac stands as one of the great icons of the late Classic Era. Handsomely presented this 1941 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Coupe is classy, sporty, and comfortable, an ideal tour car for the many CCCA events for which it is eligible.
