The R107 platform SL, all new for 1972, was a significant model for Mercedes-Benz and became an icon in the automotive world. Designer Friedrich Geiger is credited with creating the elegant styling which was indeed a masterful achievement, as evidenced by the car's enduring popularity and longevity. Geiger and Mercedes-Benz created a design that was sophisticated and understated, while still bearing a family resemblance to the rest of the Mercedes range. The R107 SL's design was characterized by its low, lean profile, crisp edges, and subtle detailing. The car's overall proportions were well-balanced, with a long hood and short deck, and its wide stance gave it a stable, surefooted appearance.
One of the most impressive aspects of Geiger's R107 SL design is that it remained virtually unchanged throughout the car's 17-year production run from 1972 to 1989. This was without a doubt a remarkable achievement for Mercedes-Benz and remains an important part of the company's history. Its timeless design, exceptional build quality, and impressive performance have made it a highly sought-after classic car today. The car's elegant, understated styling and exceptional build quality have made it an enduring symbol of 1970s and 80s glamor and a highly sought-after classic car today.
Aside from the renowned style and build quality, safety was a top priority for Mercedes-Benz during this era, and the R107 SL delivered. It featured a reinforced passenger cell, crumple zones, and front and rear impact-absorbing bumpers, features that enabled the car to earn high marks in crash tests. Worldwide, the R107 SL was available with a variety of engines, including six and eight-cylinder options mated to either manual or automatic transmissions. The final and most sought-after iteration of this platform was the 560SL, produced from 1986-89, and powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine producing 227 horsepower.
Thanks to its coupe/roadster configuration, the R107 SL was a versatile GT car. The removable hardtop allowed it to be used as a coupe in colder weather, while the soft top provided convenient open-air motoring during the warmer months. Paired with spacious trunk and luxurious interior, the R107 was a surprisingly practical choice for everyday use, and many racked up considerable mileage over the years.
