The Citroen DS is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious, influential, and distinctive automobiles ever produced. Conceived as a family sedan for the rapidly growing middle class, the DS featured advanced, self-leveling, hydro-pneumatic independent suspension, high-pressure hydraulic brakes, and a beautifully sculpted body that looked straight from the pages of a science-fiction novel. Citroen nearly went bankrupt developing the DS, requiring Michelin to step in with major investment to bring the car production. When it was introduced at the Paris Salon, it created a frenzy, with 12,000 orders taken the first day! The DS went on to a production run of nearly 1.5 million examples, and they remain a high water mark for innovation and creativity in automobile design.
This 1973 example is a highly desirable, ultimate-spec 2.3-liter model in range-topping Pallas trim, fitted with the preferred 5-speed manual gearbox and factory-equipped air conditioning.
