For the 1996 model year, Chrysler Corporation got serious about the Viper sports car. The spartan RT/10 Roadster had been on sale since 1992, and it enjoyed a strong following, but it lacked the serious racing credentials of its competitors, including Porsche, Ferrari, and the Chevrolet Corvette. In 1996, the Viper range was refreshed with more power, more refinement, and the addition of the stunning 450-horsepower GTS Coupe. The slick and evocative GTS design was strongly influenced by Pete Brock’s 1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe. With the pronounced double-bubble roof and kicked-up rear spoiler treatment, the Viper GTS captured the essence of a purebred American sports car. Dodge got the formula perfect, and the Viper GTS was an instant hit with the press and public alike. Critically, Chrysler Corporation now had the ideal platform to join the increasingly competitive and high-profile world of international GT racing. Partnering with teams like Oreca Motorsport, the Viper GTS (branded in Europe as a Chrysler), took GT-Class honors at Sebring, Le Mans, the Nurburgring, and even an overall victory at the 2000 Rolex 24 at Daytona – the first overall win for an American production-based car. The GTS Coupe’s incredible run of motorsport success elevated the Viper brand from a tire-shredding boulevard cruiser into a world-class sports car that took on and beat the best in the world.
The 1996 Viper GTS Coupe offered here is a superb, highly-desirable example from the first year of GTS production. It has covered just 4,300 miles from new and benefits from meticulous care while in the hands of an enthusiastic collector. Finished in the iconic color scheme of Viper Blue with white stripes, this GTS is in superb condition inside and out, reflective of its incredibly low mileage. The paintwork is in excellent condition all around, and the Carfax report shows a clean history. It rides on the correct original polished alloy wheels, unique to the GTS coupe.
The black leather interior reflects this car’s exceptionally low mileage and presents in excellent order, with minimal wear noted on the vulnerable seat bolsters and sills. With power windows and locks, air conditioning, airbags, and a Pioneer in-dash CD player, the GTS offers considerably more equipment compared to the spartan roadster, without sacrificing the purposeful, driver-focused attitude. Switchgear and controls are all in good order,
In late 2019, the owner commissioned an extensive, no-expense-spared service. The work included fitting a fresh set of four Pilot Sport PS2 tires, special-ordered directly from Michelin. Additional work included a full fluid/filter service, new gearbox oil, a new clutch assembly, and slave cylinder, and fuel pumps. A beautiful new high-performance Corsa stainless cat-back exhaust system lets the mighty 8-liter engine breathe freely, accentuating its unique ten-cylinder howl. The work ensures this Viper is now safe and road-ready for its next caretaker to enjoy to the fullest. The sale includes the original tires (for show purposes only) and the factory books/manuals in the original wallet.
A superlative example of Dodge’s world-beating sports car, this collector-grade, exceptionally low-mileage GTS would be a welcome addition to any enthusiast’s stable, and it will undoubtedly continue to be one of the most collectible American cars of the modern era.
