1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Avon Sedan

This supremely handsome 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I is a fantastic example of a Springfield-built Phantom, highlighting Brewster’s mastery of the art of coachbuilding. Per Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club records, chassis number S69PM was initially fitted with a Brewster-built Mayfair town-car body. In this configuration, it served as a demonstrator for the Rolls-Royce agency in Philadelphia before being sold to its first private owner, Mrs. Adele Spalding. During this time, owners of Rolls-Royce motorcars often exchanged bodies for something more suitable for their purpose and current tastes. This practice was particularly common among Silver Ghost and Phantom owners, as is the case for S69PM. Early in its life, the Mayfair body was replaced with this marvelous Avon Saloon, also by Brewster. Far more sporting than the Mayfair it replaced, the Avon is a striking design with a low roofline, blind quarters, and crisp, restrained detailing in the finest tradition of Brewster & Company. Marque enthusiasts count the Avon among the most attractive formal body styles of the period, with elegant yet sporting character.

In 1963, a Rolls-Royce collector and enthusiast acquired S69PM from Mr. O. Edward Kurt of Michigan. Photos included in the history file show the car was well-preserved and complete when it joined the new owner’s growing collection. He preferred to drive his cars, so he subsequently commissioned a restoration, calling upon marque specialists of the time including Connie Bouchard to rebuild the engine, Frank Cooke for the full stainless steel exhaust system, and others from the Rolls-Royce community to refinish and trim the coachwork. With the restoration complete, the family enjoyed S69PM regularly and occasionally participated in Classic Car Club of America, and Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club judged events.

The owner’s son inherited the car years later and continued to enjoy it in the same manner his father had for so long, ensuring it remained in top mechanical and cosmetic condition. In 2016, S69PM was handed over to Steve Littin of Vintage & Auto Rebuilds in Chardon, Ohio. Mr. Littin is a highly respected specialist in Prewar Rolls-Royce motorcars, and he was entrusted with sorting the car properly. Additional service work and some freshening of the coachwork were also addressed.

Now available after 55 years of continuous family ownership, S69PM remains as handsome and charming as ever. Finished in Sheridan blue with black wings, it is offered in excellent condition with an attractive patina and appealing luster to the paintwork. Details include drum headlights with matching drum cowl lamps, an upholstered trunk, Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, and an opening windscreen. The black upholstered roof contributes to the car’s attractive low profile, as do the black painted wire wheels with black wall Firestone tires.

The interior is finished with tan leather in the front and rear, tan carpets, wool broadcloth headlining, and restored woodwork. The upholstery shows some signs of aging but is overall in very good condition considering the time elapsed since its restoration. Similarly, the engine bay is tidy and well-detailed with authentic finishes and fittings, and it shows signs of regular use and service. Thanks to continuous maintenance, it runs well with all of the refinement and effortless progress expected of a Phantom I and is wonderfully suited to use in tours and rallies. Chassis number S69PM benefits from decades of attentive care in the hands of passionate enthusiasts. It looks and drives very well indeed, and will undoubtedly be a rewarding and immensely enjoyable motorcar for years to come.
