1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 Coupe

Produced between 1963 and 1976, Alfa’s lovely Giulia GTV Coupe was one of the most widely adored versions of the popular and versatile Giulia line. Based on a shortened Berlina platform, the coupe featured unique styling designed by the brilliant Giorgetto Giugiaro for Carrozzeria Bertone. The coupe shared its mechanical makeup with the Berlina and Spider, including coil-sprung suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and five-speed gearbox. Alfa’s iconic twin-cam inline-four was offered in various displacements ranging from 1300 cc to 2000 cc with twin carbs or Spica mechanical fuel injection. Equally at home cruising the interstate as it is tearing up back roads, the GTV’s combination of practicality and performance makes it the ideal all-round classic for driving enthusiasts.

This crisp and attractive 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV represents the final evolution of the long-running Giulia coupe line. This US-spec GTV 2000 features the two-liter version of Alfa’s brilliant twin-cam engine, equipped from new with Spica mechanical fuel injection and a 5-speed gearbox. The subject of a comprehensive mechanical rebuild, it features a host of desirable updates and improvements both visible and under the skin. The beautiful Bertone designed body is in excellent order, with sharp lines and very good quality silver paintwork. As part of the restoration, it was updated with European specification bumpers and side marker lamps, and fitted with superb reproduction GTA-style alloys from Alfaholics in the UK. Lenses and bright exterior trim are in good condition, with straight bumpers, alloy window surrounds, and the late-style four-headlight grille.

The four-place cabin is comfortable, airy, and a marvelous place to spend a day of spirited motoring. The black vinyl trim is in excellent condition on the quarters and door panels, and the newer black carpets fit well. Highly desirable “flying buttress” sports seats, backdated from a 1969 GTV, are in excellent order with proper black vinyl upholstery, and the rear seats are upholstered to match with material sourced from specialists Re-Originals. The dash features original Veglia Borletti gauges updated with glass faces on the speedo and tach, a period-style modern radio with aux-input, wood-rimmed wheel, and lovely wood dash inserts. The console houses the classic angled-shifter for the 5-speed ‘box, which is topped with a factory-correct shift knob.

Mechanically, the car is extremely well-sorted, benefitting from a comprehensive rebuild beginning in 2011, and recent service work by a marque specialist. Built by marque specialist Don Ereminas of Ereminas Imports, the 2.0-liter twin cam features a host of upgrades to improve performance, refinement, and power. Features include:

  • Reground crankshaft with threaded bronze plugs
  • 10:1 compression Borgo Pistons
  • Columbo & Bariani 10.9mm lift/270-degree camshafts
  • NOS cylinder head
  • New rods, cylinder liners, timing chains, oil pump, water pump
  • Lightened flywheel

In addition, the original Spica mechanical injection was rebuilt and tuned. Recent service included fitting a new, original style rear muffler, allowing the little 2-liter to sing freely. Backing the engine is an Ereminas-built 5-speed gearbox, with new synchros, bearings, and a special lightened gearset to improve synchronizer life. The flywheel has been conservatively lightened for a snappier feel without sacrificing drivability. Looking underneath, the suspension and floors are exceptionally clean and tidy. Updates include Koni shocks and 1.5” lowering spring at each corner to tighten up the handling.

All of these subtle yet significant improvements add up to a car that feels cohesive and immensely enjoyable to drive. The engine is eager and revs freely, with a character similar to the earlier and sought-after 1750 engines. Paired with a gearbox that is positive and smooth in its operation, the car exudes confidence during spirited driving. With punchy performance, balanced handling, excellent brakes, and sophisticated styling by the masters at Carrozzeria Bertone there’s no wonder the Alfa GTV is one of the most beloved driver’s cars of the era, and this exceptionally well-sorted example is perfect for carving up your favorite ribbons of tarmac.
