For the 1971 Model year, Jaguar treated the E-Type to a comprehensive overhaul. Thanks largely in part to ever-tightening American safety and emissions laws, the original E-type was being constantly tweaked to accommodate the rapidly changing regulations. Jaguar grew tired of half-baked fixes and determined that a fully revised model was in order. In late 1970 Jaguar unveiled the engine that would power this revitalized E-type – an all-new, all-alloy 5.3 liter V12 engine with four carburetors and single overhead cams. The new engine promised performance that would live up to the E-Type’s reputation, along with superior smoothness and refinement. The body was also massively altered. The new “Series III” was longer, lower and wider than the outgoing Series II. The styling fully integrated the new requirements for open headlamps and bumper height, and the flared fenders and egg-crate grill freshened up the looks for the new decade. Inside, driver and passenger were met with a roomier cockpit that still maintained the E-Type spirit, but with a more relaxed, Grand Touring feel. Highly boosted power steering added to the relaxed nature, but the E-Type was still a genuine performance machine thanks to its 272 horsepower and turbine-like power delivery. After 7,990 roadsters and 7,297 2+2 coupes had been produced, Series III production ended in 1975.
This 1973 E-Type 2+2 Coupe is an exceptionally original example showing a mere 15,727 miles. The mileage is true, with the documentation and physical details to back it up. First delivered through Bilsco Auto Service of Buffalo, New York, this car came well equipped with desirable options such as chrome knock-off wire wheels, factory air conditioning, four-speed manual transmission, heated rear window and whitewall tires. The Signal Red paint is lovely and original, having been carefully maintained over 42 years and expertly freshened by our in-house team. Panel fit is outstanding as one would expect from a car that has never been apart and never suffered from any corrosion issues. The Dunlop chrome wire wheels are gorgeous and currently wear fresh radial tires with correct narrow whitewalls. With such exceptionally low miles, a great many small details remain that often disappear from restored cars. For example, the front and rear windscreens carry “Triplex Laminated” stickers that do not appear on reproduction glass. The radiator has a “Bluecol AA” sticker on the header tank, and the spare tire is the factory supplied Dunlop on the original wheel.
Under the bonnet lies the correct matching numbers 5.3 liter V12. The only non-original parts that are apparent are normal service items such as the battery and belts. The records show this car was exceptionally well serviced through its life and very carefully maintained in its current, time-warp condition.
The lovely red paint contrasts nicely with the biscuit tan interior, also very well preserved in original state. The dash wears the factory installed radio, and the air conditioning unit is in excellent condition – with no broken vents or faded finishes as so often occurs. The original perforated leather remains in very nice condition, with no rips or tears, and just a very slight patina from very light use. Biscuit carpets are also excellent, as are the rear seats and trunk compartment.
Included in the sale will be the original tools, jack, window sticker, original manual for the Blaupunkt radio and a reproduction owner’s manual and lube chart. This Series III E-Type is as rock solid and original as they get; a true benchmark for originality among the V12 cars. Thanks to the care and regular maintenance it has received over the years, it is thankfully very usable as well; the rare combination of a car that is in time-warp condition but has been thoroughly and carefully maintained through the years.
