The story of Tony Ostermeier's 300SLs is well known. Meticulously copied after the originals, Ostermeier built his own tube frame chassis, clothing them in bodies so close to the originals that they were purchased by Mercedes-Benz as replacements, and fitting late model inline six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz drivelines with power driver assists and updated comfort features. Ostermeier is best known for his Gullwing coupes, but after firmly establishing their reputation he turned his attention to building a limited series of 300SL roadsters. Only 25 of these cars are believed to have been built and this one is believed to be either the last or next-to-last of the series. Although it is titled as a 1963 Mercedes-Benz It is based on a 1995 E320 fuel injected engine, automatic transmission and suspension and shows only 38,000km on its odometer. It is equipped with a Becker AM-FM radio, air conditioning, fitted luggage, automatic transmission, chrome wheels and black wall tires. It includes a complete file from new including photographic record of its construction, 1995 Mercedes E320 service manual, original owner's manual, sales brochure, operating instructions and instrument reference guide from Tony Ostermeier's Gullwing Cars. Finished in red with tan leather upholstery and a black cloth top, it is virtually indistinguishable from the original on the road except to its occupants who are coddled in modern conveniences, air conditioning and power assists.
