1985 Ferrari 308 GTSi QV Spyder

Ferrari’s iconic 308 is perhaps one of the most instantly recognizable sports cars of all time. The 308 was Ferrari’s first major commercial success, popularized in television and movies, and going on to sell more than 12,000 units from 1975 through 1985, with a further 6000 of the reworked 328. The 308GTB was intended to be a replacement for the rather unloved 308GT4, and was seen as more of a spiritual successor to the glorious 246GT. The 308 sat below the Boxer and the 400GT as the entry level model. The transverse 3 liter V8 and 5-speed gearbox were essentially carried over from the GT4, but the rest of the car was treated to a full makeover. The beautiful styling was penned by Leonardo Fiovaranti at Pininfarina, which was in stark contrast to the angular Bertone-styled GT4, and it featured soft curves, a buttressed roofline and signature sculpted air inlets in the doors.

During its lifespan, the four-cam V8 went through several evolutions. Initially a two-valve per cylinder engine with a quartet of Weber carbs, it gained Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection in 1980 to become the GTBi and GTSi. The injected cars ran cleaner and smoother, but suffered a loss in horsepower. Two years later, the missing horsepower returned with the addition of four-valve cylinder heads which drastically improved breathing. With performance restored, and the addition of better drivability thanks to refined fuel injection, the 308 GTSi QV (Quattrovalvole, simply, four valve) was better than ever and remains among the most desirable of the series for collectors and serious drivers alike. In today’s terms, the performance isn’t earth-shattering, but looking beyond the numbers, the 308 delivers a sublime drive thanks to perfectly balanced handling and steering feel, a crisp and vocal V8 soundtrack, and of course that iconic Pininfarina coachwork.

This fantastic 308GTSi Quattrovalvole is a crisp and exquisite example that has covered a mere 32,275 miles from new. It has been very well maintained throughout its life, always cherished and never neglected. It is finished in classic Rosso Corsa over tan leather, with a black targa top. The paint is excellent, the shut lines are factory precise, and the body work is laser straight. It has clearly never been damaged and a clean Carfax report backs up what the body tells us. The tan leather interior shows almost no wear, further evidence of a very careful life. A 308’s interior can easily be sun damaged or suffer from heavy-handed use, but this example retains clean, supple leather, a crack/shrink-free dash, and clean tidy carpeting. Other than a modern AM/FM CD player, the interior remains completely stock. Even the original cover for the targa top remains in place and in excellent condition – a commonly missing item on a GTS.

The three-liter, fuel-injected, 32-valve V8 engine is strong and tight, free of leaks and presents very well in the engine bay. Like the interior, the engine bay is clean and highly original. A major service (which includes timing belts) was performed at 31,086 miles and the factory air conditioning has been converted to modern R134A refrigerant. An original service booklet is included, which shows regular dealer servicing from new through 1989, when presumably the owner serviced the car via an independent shop. Other recent work includes a fresh set of tires in April of 2013, mounted on the correct original 16” alloy wheels. This is a well sorted, turnkey example in fine mechanical and cosmetic condition.

Tight, clean and very well presented, this 308 GTSi is pretty enough for show – as evident by its recent appearance at the famous Concorso Italiano. The sale includes the original owner’s manual, service booklet, and warranty booklet, original wallet for the books, original California registration, original tool kit and the aforementioned targa top cover. This is a fine example of a rapidly appreciating classic Ferrari in very desirable specification which is ready to be enjoyed to the fullest.
