1963 MG MGB

The MG B marked a pivotal step in the evolution of the sports car when it pioneered a lightweight frameless unit body structure with exceptional rigidity. It was the antithesis of the cart-sprung, flexible frame MGs that had preceded it. The MG B was so successful that it remained In production for two decades, the last automobile produced at MG’s famed Abingdon works and the proud final chapter in a long and distinguished history of open MG sports cars. Powered by a 1789 cc engine that delivered 94 horsepower at 5500 rpm, it had such features as front disc brakes and the luxury of rollup windows and standard vent windows. Although the wheelbase was 3 inches shorter than the MG A it replaced, the MG B also provided more interior room.

This 1963 MG B Roadster is a particularly early example and therefore one of the more pure, rare and desirable examples most easily distinguished by their pull-handle doors instead of the button-operated handles of later cars. It is finished in black and has a red interior piped in black, black vinyl convertible top and top boot, chrome wire wheels, blackwall radial tires and proper original three-spoke steering wheel. In addition to its desirability as a pull-handle car, this MG B is simply outstanding in its presence and condition.

A California car that has been fully ground up restored, it has exquisite paint, chrome and interior as well as a highly detailed engine bay. Its thorough concours-quality restoration was done to a much higher standard than is usually seen on an MG B, and it stands out as a particularly phenomenal example. The restoration was also done with authenticity in mind, and all equipment is proper and correct. The only accessory is an oil cooler, a sensible and appreciated addition that will enhance its usability in warmer climates and add to the engine’s longevity. The MG B is one of the definitive classic British roadsters. Not rare in the quantitative sense, this early example with its show quality condition inside and out is in rare and highly desirable condition.
