1964 Alfa Romeo Sprint

Unless you're Italian it's hard to explain, let alone understand, the Sprint Speciale. Designed by Bertone's flamboyant Franco Scaglione, the Sprint Speciale first appeared on the 101-series Giulietta platform in 1957. A fantastic aerodynamic exercise from the creator of the fabulous Alfa Romeo B.A.T. concepts, the Sprint Speciale also paid tribute to Alfa's Touring-designed 1952 Disco Volante show car and the 6C 3000 CM race cars which followed it. Eventually 1,366 1,290cc Giulietta Sprint Speciales and 1,399 later 1,570cc Giulias were built, futuristic concept cars engineered, equipped and developed for the road. Only in Italy would, or could, a nationalized manufacturer build such glorious, exotic automobiles. This 1964 Sprint Speciale is one of the later and more powerful Giulia Veloce series with a pair of Weber 40DCOE carburetors and more aggressive cams making 125 SAE horsepower and a 5-speed gearbox that for nearly a generation defined the "hot-knife-through-butter" experience. Finished in red with black leather upholstery piped in red and black carpets, it is a fabulous, fresh restoration that earned a Concorso Italiano Best in Class in 2010 and was invited to the Pebble Beach Concours on the same weekend after participating in the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance. Imported to the U.S. in 1980 from its first owner in Italy, it is accompanied by its complete Italian logbook from new through 1980 as well as ACI papers, its original Italian registration document and tool kit. Radial blackwall tires ride on correct silver painted steel wheels. The hood has a Plexiglas wind deflector in front of the windshield and the spare tire is correctly fitted with its original type hold downs. The paint, chrome, interior, chassis and engine are beyond perfect; the bodywork's fits and gaps are precise, flat and even. It is a concept car for the street, expressing style, performance, aerodynamic function and beautiful workmanship that will bring onlookers to a standstill, but also a finely engineered, developed and assembled automobile with great performance, extreme road holding and intuitive responsiveness that will delight the most experienced and enthusiastic driver.
